"As I cycled I felt tears of pain roll down my cheeks, I had never experienced such exhaustion. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, the rain began to pour down heavily. The rain was so heavy that I was being splashed by every passing car and could not see more than four metres in front of me. I began shivering uncontrollably as my body temperature dropped. I knew I needed to keep going in order to stay warm, if I stopped I would be in serious trouble. I slowly snuck through the kilometres and by 3pm I had done just 35 kilometres. I frantically looked around in the hills for safe places to pitch my tent as I pushed on; it was getting dark and would soon be a target." Extract from the book
