 ROCK CLIMBING

DESCRIPTION

Rock climbing is a sport in which participants climb up or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a pre-defined route. Rock climbing competitions have objectives of completing the route in the quickest possible time or the furthest along an ever increasingly harder route. Rock climbing is similar to scrambling (another activity involving the scaling of hills and similar formations), but climbing is generally differentiated because of the use of hands to support the climber's weight as well as to provide balance.

Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport, one that often tests a climber's strength, endurance, agility, and balance along with his or her mental control. It can be a dangerous sport and knowledge of proper climbing techniques and usage of specialized climbing equipment is crucial for the safe completion of routes.

Black Diamond Tradathon
This past weekend saw over 100 climbers on The Ledge on Table Mountain. With perfect weather and a great venue it is no wonder this was a record number of climbers seen on Table Mountain on any one day!

Black Diamond's South African distributor, Simon Larsen, had this to say, We were completely stoked with the turnout of climbers on the mountain. We estimate 150 routes were climbed on the day with Arrow Final, Staircase, Africa Crag, Africa Eyrie; Jacobs ladder, Roulette; Captain Hook, Arms Race Direct, Edge of the Ledge, Dynamite (26) to name but a few!

Douw Steyn & Willem Le Roux's performance was worthy of notice, after climbing routes:
Dynamite (with Oddshouters P1) - 20, 19, 26
Arms Race Direct - 25, 21, 22
Captain Hook - 17, 23, 20
No Longer at Ease (with first pitch from tea cave) - 19, 25
Magnetic Wall - 19
Arrow Final - 12, 12, 12

While some climbers were bagging routes, others were learning the ropes in the trad. lead and follow workshops. The workshop numbers exceeded expectations with 31 people signed up!

With 2012 being such a great success it was announced that the next Black Diamond Tradathon will be held in Magaliesberg 2013! Details will be posted on
