Scuba – The Sport that’s Shaping Top Celebs

Words: ITP Communications

How do you burn up to 900 calories an hour, tone your entire body, and de-stress in the most beautiful environments on the planet? Scuba diving.

Scuba is fast becoming a popular way for movie stars to shape up and have fun at the same time. The likes of Penelope Cruz, Katie Holmes, Sandra Bullock, Nina Dobrev, Kathleen Turner, Paris Hilton, Tom Cruise and James Cameron have taken to diving at the world’s top destinations. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) says scuba diving works the whole body, toning and strengthening muscles. Apparently the average woman can burn up to 400 calories in half an hour of scuba diving – roughly the same as an intense gym workout, but without the sweat and joint impact.

It’s great for de-stressing too, forcing divers to focus on their breathing and enjoy being in a magnificent underwater environment – a world away from multitasking panic mode.

The good news is that the scuba diving experience isn’t restricted to the rich and famous. Equipment prices have dropped, and a competitive tourism and adventure sports industry has put scuba training and getaway packages well within reach of most.

To give it a try, get to the Dive Expo & Watersports Show from 16-18 August at The Coca-Cola in Northriding, where a ‘Try Dive’ pool will give you a feel for what scuba diving is all about. You’ll find discounts on dive courses, equipment and holiday packages; and hear talks from seasoned divers, as well as enjoying a range of promotional activities and the chance to win great prizes.
