On Sunday, 21 July 2013 the streets of Durban will be teaming with enthusiastic runners taking part in the much loved Totalsports Ladies Race as a prelude to National Women’s Day. The 2013 Totalsports Ladies Race Durban has once again aligned itself with the inspirational Jes Foord Foundation, an organisation that offers free counselling and support for rape survivors.

According to Lisa Poll, Marketing Manager The Jes Foord Foundation, it’s an honour to be the Totalsports Ladies Race’s charity of choice for three years running. “We love partnering with such a well-known event and really appreciate the opportunity to spread the message of the Jes Foord Foundation to the thousands of runners that participate in the race. The Foundation opened its doors in 2009 following the brutal gang rape of Jes Foord by four men while her father was forced to watch. Jes’ aim was to start an organization that would improve the compassionate treatment of rape survivors, to restore lives after rape, to be that somebody to those that have nobody and to educate people about the realities of rape in South Africa. The Foundation does this by offering free ongoing counselling to rape survivors, founding Rape Crisis Care Centres where victims receive medical treatment and trauma counselling free of charge, and by providing motivational talks to schools, corporate and community groups stressing rape prevention and awareness. We have several other initiatives like the Handbag Project, KiddiPak Project and Rugby Against Rape which also advance our mission,” says Poll.

“We are always happy to get involved with events that empower women and celebrate their accomplishments,” continues Poll. “Although none of our staff will be running, we will have loyal JFF supporters taking part on the day as part of the Running Against Rape Campaign. They will be the runners wearing green shoelaces, JFF flower logo tattoos and sometimes even lime green tutus. Jes’ Women’s Day message to the runners is to always believe in yourself, you can do whatever you set out to do. Don’t look at how far you still have to go, look at how far you’ve already come”.
