Take a Stand and Join the Rhino Run

Up until March this year, I was just another South African who was ignorant to the reality of how bad rhino poaching has become in South Africa. Like most of us, I heard about it every day in the news, saw the posts on Facebook and Twitter, and while I was aware of it I didn't really comprehend the reality of it until I saw the Facebook campaign that Dr. Will Fowlds started when three rhinos were poached in March at the Kariega Game Reserve, just down the road from where I live in Port Elizabeth.

My Fish River Canyon trail run record attempt was a personal quest for me wanting to push my own boundaries, while running in one of the most beautiful but harsh environments on our planet. This pursuit would not have been possible without the help and support of a number of passionate individuals - thanks team, I was not out there alone!
Rukadza makes it a Championship hat trick

Bernard Rukadza ran into the Trail Series history books on Saturday, 18 August 2012 at the Cape Winter Trail Series final race at Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, Kleinmond, by becoming the first runner to secure a hat trick of Cape Winter Trail Series Championships. A slender seven second lead over Riaan Wildskut in the 13.8km race four of this year’s Championship ensured not only a hat trick of race wins in 2012, but his third Cape Winter Trail Series Championship title in as many years. This makes Rukadza the most successful Trail Series athlete in the five year history of these events.

Record field for St Johns kick starts popular Bundu Bash series

Pietermaritzburg - Strong winds did not deter eager adventure racers of all ages as the popular St John's DSG Bundu Bash saw entries almost double as the multisport race kicked started the 2012 triangular series on Sunday at the Baynesfield Estate just outside Pietermaritzburg, with numbers for the mountain bike and trail running event rising dramatically from 450 in 2011 to 780 this time around.

It was a colourful scene on Sunday, with brightly coloured, mismatched, hooped long socks proving to be the fashion statement of choice, and while the sun shone the wind became progressively stronger, which made the biking component of the events pretty testing.

It was also somewhat ironic, given the way the wind whipped things up, that two of those events went by the name “the...

K-Way sponsors trail runner Andre Calitz

Trail runner Andre Calitz is blitzing the local trail running scene as he wins – and sets new records – on challenging courses.

Last year, 29-year old Calitz - known as ‘AJ’ in trail running circles - won the Three Peaks Challenge, taking 16 minutes off the previous record. He has triumphed at numerous local runs including the Muizenberg Trail where he set the course record.
This year he ascended Table Mountain’s Platteklip Gorge a record 11 times between sunrise and sunset to win the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge. His most-recent win comes at the two-day Grootvadersbosch Trail Run, where he set new records on both days, and firmly establishes Calitz as a fast, record-setting trail runner to watch.

Although Calitz is a relative newcomer to trail running, his...

It was a chilly morning when I met Paul at the Wine Village in Hermanus. Mist was driving in from the sea and the Hemel en Aarde Valley was slowly waking up. Paul had invited me to test drive the 12 km trail run that is part of his new event, the Groenberg 12 km Trail Run and 6 km Fun Run to be held in the Hemel en Aarde Valley on Saturday 11 August. As a trail running enthusiast and always on the lookout for different experiences, I was intrigued to find out what this route held in store.

Now into it's 10th year, the Cheese Festival Farmland Run, a gravel road race, is regarded by many runners as one of the most beautiful races in the country. So it comes as no surprise that this rural run's popularity has been on the increase amongst athletes who favour fresh air, less crowded starts and spectacular views of the Outeniqua Mountains, rustic cattle farms and rolling green pastures as far as the eye can see.

Trail Running Safety

With the explosion of trail running in the country, safety becomes a serious issue. I’m not just referring to safety against thugs or low lives, but rather the kind of safety that you, as a runner, should be responsible for – your own.
