The Different Faces of Africa
Share
...
During the three-and-a-half months and 5,300 km that Hendrik and I have cycled unassisted through Central Africa, we have been exposed to the many faces of Africa; some bad, some good, some happy and some sad. But what has been so memorable for us is the realness of this experience, regardless of the face presented, and with it our love of Africa has deepened. Here are just a few of the incredible encounters we've had on this journey that has been so inspiring and, ultimately, life changing.
Old Faithful Travels to Messum Crater - Part 1

The Messum Crater had been on our bucket list for some time, as we anticipated that it would be one of those unique landscapes one always reads about. Namibia is also blessed with many contrasting landscapes, so we knew we were not going to be disappointed. We happened to receive an invitation to a wedding in Swakopmund and decided there and then that this would be an ideal opportunity to visit the western part of Namibia and this famous landmark.

Summiting Africa's Icy Crown

Trekking to the roof of Africa is on a lot of people’s bucket lists. Climbing Kilimanjaro from the Machame route, the route of choice amongst most climbers because of the impressive views and a variety of habitats it provides, was at the top of mine.

Touring through Baobab Country

South African solo adventurer and environmental activist Kayden Kleinhans has been using the bicycle to highlight our over reliance on fossil fuels and oil dependency, and his message is easy to understand and clear: ride a bike instead of driving a car (when you can) and our carbon footprint will be reduced. To prove this point, he is cycling around the world solo and doing it happily.

Facing our Giants in Eden, Part 3

Right from the start of our tour through untamed central Africa on bicycles, Hendrik and I knew we might have to complete it in stages. He's a commercial diver and works on a contract basis, and if assigned to a job we would have to halt the tour temporarily.

Mozambique, on a Scooter

Motorcycling is an expensive pastime, right? And to go touring on a bike only increases the cost, right? Well to some extent you’re right, but it all depends on what bike you use.

My husband, Hendrik, and I had been cycling through central Africa for the past eight weeks and had covered a distance of 2500km of our 5000km trip.
Bray ... waar’s dit?

Most people’s reaction when you tell them that you live in Bray is, "Where’s that?" And when you try to google it, you also find nothing. The little town of Bray is 220km west of Mafikeng in the North West Province, along the Molopo River, and its name comes from its beloved inhabitants, the donkeys.

Cape to Cairo on Two 200cc Motomia Motorcycles

The 'made in China' sticker can be found on more than half of the goods we own these days and let’s be honest, the association is not always a positive one. But, the price is cheap and in today’s tough economy that is exactly what we need. When thinking about motorcycles we immediately think about BMW, KTM, Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki, to name only a few; all are good quality and very expensive.
