The phenomenal success of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, since its release on 28 November last year, continues as people flock to cinemas around the country to share in his life story. The film, which has earned a much-coveted Oscar nomination for its beautiful love song, Ordinary Love, from super band U2, tells the story of one of the world’s greatest global icons, while it reveals an important part of this country’s history.

Ster-Kinekor: Great Moments at their Greatest

“Throughout his life, no matter what the circumstances, Nelson Mandela fought for freedom for the people of South Africa against a repressive and unjust government and its apartheid system. His life lessons, and all that he stood and fought for, need to be shared. For this reason, Ster-Kinekor in partnership with producer Anant Singh and Videovision Entertainment, is offering special screenings of the film to schools across South Africa,” says Fiaz Mahomed, CEO of Ster-Kinekor Theatres.

“This is a magnificent film in its own right. However, the fact that it allows us to understand and appreciate what Madiba went through in order to achieve a democratic South Africa and freedom for all, is a history lesson to which we should all be exposed. The current school learners were born into a free South Africa, but it is important for them to understand what sacrifices were made along this road to freedom. This special ticket offer for schools gives them that opportunity – and we encourage as many schools as possible to take advantage of it.”

Schools can make a block booking for their learners (over the age of 10) to go and watch Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom for the first two shows of the day, from Monday to Thursday, at a specially reduced rate. Tickets and block bookings for these special school screenings can be purchased by contacting Nerisha Maharaj at Ster-Kinekor Theatres on: 011 445 8589 or via e-mail on: .

“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a fitting tribute to our beloved ‘Madiba’, the late former South African President, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. We urge schools to make the booking to give their learners a wonderful history lesson on the big screen,” concludes Mahomed.
